About

Brian Coutinho is a ceramic artist whose work explores the tension between intuition and precision, blending organic inspiration with meticulous craftsmanship. Drawing from the untamable vitality of nature, he transforms rigid materials like porcelain and stoneware into expressive, narrative-driven forms through detailed line drawings and layered glazing techniques.

His creations reflect a fascination with symbolic interpretations of human existence, influenced by mythology, folklore and the untamable forces of nature. Coutinho’s work juxtaposes the wild and the cultivated, using contrasts in materials and themes to evoke complex, archetypal stories about life, survival, and transformation. His perfectionist process is balanced by intuitive decision-making, resulting in layered, thought-provoking pieces that evoke both the natural world and deeply personal associations.

Background

Brian Coutinho was born and raised in Amsterdam and currently lives and works in ’s-Hertogenbosch. He is a classic example of a late bloomer.

Having grown up without much encouragement towards art, it wasn’t until later in life that he found his way into the art world. After studying Fine Arts and Design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, he embarked on his artistic journey in 2011. In ceramics, Brian seeks technical challenges and thrives on experimentation, yet his creations always stem from his imagination.

Each of his works tells a story of personal growth. This process is ongoing, and as a result, his narratives continue to evolve, becoming richer and more complex. Brian finds great satisfaction in captivating his audience with his art—often, their responses are as intuitive and associative as his creative methods.
