Akua'ba

Since 2020, Brian Coutinho has been immersed in the intricate art of crafting akua'ba-inspired ceramic statues, blending traditional symbolism with a contemporary artistic approach. His work revisits and reinterprets the iconic akua'ba figures, which have deep roots in the spiritual and cultural heritage of the Ashanti people of Ghana. Traditionally, these statues are particularly used in fertility rites, embodying the interconnectedness of life, family, and spiritual aspirations.

Coutinho’s journey began with the creation of "Ima," a 74cm tall statue symbolically regarded as the "grandmother" of all future pieces. Each subsequent statue in the series has evolved from this foundational work, varying in size, form, and finishing. Maintaining the symbolic integrity of the originals Coutinho introduces new textures, linework and glazes, emphasizing fluidity and transformation. Each piece is an ongoing exploration of identity, and cultural memory, evolving in tandem with the artist’s personal journey and artistic growth.

The akua'ba creations are not static; they are dynamic, evolving with time and inspiration. Through this ongoing series, Coutinho bridges two worlds—connecting ancient traditions with the present moment, representing the balance between fragility and strength, the past and the future, and the individual and the collective.
